It was no secret that Zion Williamson would be the number one pick in the NBA Draft, and he was still overcome with emotion about going first overall.
Zion Williamson knew from the time he donned a Duke Blue Devil uniform that he would be the first pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Although he long knew this, he was still overcome with emotion about being the first player off the board. In the interview with ESPN after he was selected first by the New Orleans Pelicans, he couldn’t even finish before he became emotion describing the path to get to this stage.
Heck, we cried watching him cry.
It’s something truly special when you see that hard work you put in finally come to fruition, but what puts it over the top is to be acknowledged by the people it took to clear the path to get you to that moment.
That wasn’t lost on Zion when he went on stage to shake NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s hand. It wasn’t lost on him when he went to Duke, and it certainly wasn’t lost on him when he played for Spartanburg Day School.
Mom was with him every step of the way, and when his dream was finally realized, he couldn’t help but be overcome with emotion. Normally, this moment would be branded as a Twitter meme, but NBA Twitter went the opposite way.
It was a sweet, emotional moment for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, one that will be a draft memory for years to come. Zion is going to become a superstar in this league, he long knew that; and one day, maybe soon, he will be crying those same tears again, only that time, it will be in the middle of an NBA court when he brings the Pelicans a championship.
