Best sports performances and athletes of 2019

The Sports Oscars recognize the best performances of the year — on the court/field/pitch or otherwise — in sports.

The Oscars are great if you love film, but if you spend every waking hour watching sports, the award show can be a bit…inaccessible. You know Marriage Story and Joker memes from Twitter, but you might be surprised to learn that the former is about a divorce and the latter is the bane of most critics’ existence.

But we here at FanSided want you to feel included in award season — included without having to catch up on 50 hours of movies. And so we’re presenting the FanSided Sports Oscars.

Like the Oscars, they recognize outstanding performances and technical achievements. Like the Oscars, the nominees are determined by a mysterious body of voters. There will be snubs. There will miscategorizations. But the feelings you feel — anger, confusion, indignation, validation, existential despair at the passage of time because how on Earth did that happen last year? — are the same feelings being felt by your film fan counterparts right now.

Here, then, are the nominees for the first FanSided Sports Oscars. Winners will be announced Wednesday, Feb. 5, four days before the other Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 9.

(If you’re here by mistake and are looking for the actual 2020 Oscar nominees — you know, the real ones for movies — our pals in the entertainment section have got what you need.)
