Will the Cleveland Cavaliers snare another draft pick from the Boston Celtics?
Isaiah Thomas took a physical on Friday for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and there hasn’t been a lot of noise about how it went. The Cavaliers could end up voiding the trade according to the Washington Post, if the Boston Celtics lied about Isaiah’s injury, but the other scenario involves Cleveland demanding another draft pick. Kevin O’Connor from the Ringer brought up this possibility recently on Twitter.
Cleveland traded for Thomas after Kyrie Irving made a demand to management, and many said the Cavaliers got the better end of this deal. Along with Irving, they received the Brooklyn Nets’ unprotected first-round pick in 2018, and they managed to get Jae Crowder and Ante Zizic too.
Another draft pick would mean flexibility for Cleveland. They could either use the asset to bolster their roster this season, or they could keep the pick in case that LeBron James leaves town again.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavs are “still evaluating the injury, weighing options. All players must pass [a] physical, or a deal can be voided. It’s a very sensitive situation.”
There are a lot of players on the market that Cleveland could go after if they receive an extra pick. Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade have both been mentioned in the past, but at least one of those guys will be available via buyout at some point this season. It remains unclear what will happen with this situation, but it is definitely uncomfortable for all parties involved.
Apparently Isaiah’s feelings were hurt by the trade, and obviously Kyrie doesn’t want to be in Cleveland next year. The Celtics and Cavaliers will speak sometime today, and Irving will take his physical this weekend as well. We should know more in the coming hours, but don’t expect Boston to give up more picks without a fight.
