In a blockbuster move, Kyrie Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics to the shock of many, including NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade.
Dwyane Wade quickly took to Twitter to express his surprise following the trade that sends Kyrie Irving to Boston and Isaiah Thomas to Cleveland. He simply tweeted an emoji of two eyes looking interested and intrigued.
Rudy Gay, a fellow NBA player, tweeted a pensive emoji just minutes after the trade was initially reported.
The Boston Celtics will acquire Kyrie Irving, while the Cavaliers will add Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the first-round pick of the Brooklyn Nets in the 2018 NBA Draft, per Shams Charania of the Vertical.
The blockbuster deal that came to fruition very quickly carries huge ramifications for the upcoming NBA season. The Celtics and Cavaliers finished first and second in the Eastern Conference last season, respectively.
This trade could push the Cavaliers over the edge and into the top spot in the conference. Crowder rounds out the defense nicely with his size and ability to stretch the floor. However, the Celtics should also be happy with adding Kyrie Irving, who is one of the league’s best point guards. With Gordon Hayward, they have one of the most talented starting line-ups in the NBA.
The trade is of particular interest to Wade, who will likely join the Cavaliers at some point this season, according to Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon. This would create a reunion between Wade and LeBron James, who played together in Miami from 2010 to 2014.
Wade was likely looking forward to playing with the exciting Irving, but will have to settle for Isaiah Thomas. Thomas averaged 28.9 points per game last season, which was the fifth-best rate in the entire league. He can deal the ball nicely, as well, averaging nearly six assists per game last season.
