Kyrie Irving officially requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. The request occured at a meeting last week.
Kyrie Irving is apparently unhappy with what is going on with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving showed his displeasure at a meeting last weekend, according to ESPN. With LeBron James leading the Cavs offense, it appears that Irving would like to seek out a bigger role for another team. Despite Cleveland reaching the NBA Finals the past three years in a row, all is not well with the Cavs.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN had the following:
“The request came last week and was made to Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Irving has expressed that he wants to go play in a situation where he can be a more focal point and no longer wants to play alongside LeBron James, sources said.”
In fairness, there is turmoil in the Cavs front office. After firing David Griffin, the Cavs took awhile to name a General Manager after Chauncey Billups turned them down. With LeBron James having just one-year remaining on his contract, this Cavs roster could turn to ashes in no time. That’s not even mentioning the fact that Kevin Love has been brought into several trade rumors.
Kyrie’s agent Jeff Wechsler would not confirm or deny the trade request.
“Kyrie and I had a meeting with Cavs leadership where we discussed many different scenarios in reference to Kyrie and his future with the team,” Wechsler told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. “The basis of those discussions and what went on in those discussions are between the Cavs and us. We are respectfully going to keep those private.”
The latest reports come immediately after Irving spoke to the media where he called the Cavs a “peculiar” place.
“I understand we’re in a very peculiar place,” Irving told the magazine. “We just have to, you know, make sure that all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there. It’s the summertime, a lot of craziness going on in the NBA.”
Irving, 25, has played for Cleveland for his entire career after being selected from Duke first overall in 2011. Kyrie will have three-years remaining on his contract worth a total of $60 million. It remains to be seen whether a trade for the young superstar will actually come to fruition.
