NBA Free Agency, Orlando Magic

5 offseason targets for the Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic have a lot of decisions to make this summer, but the first position they should look at upgrading in free agency is point guard.

The Orlando Magic have been making poor front office decisions for a long time. Trading for Serge Ibaka looked good on the surface at first, but ultimately they gave up a lot to rent a player who never wanted to be there. Victor Oladipo has a bright future in the NBA, and he was one of the key reasons, along with Russell Westbrook’s brilliance, that the Oklahoma City Thunder made the playoffs this season. The Magic should’ve kept Oladipo around. That didn’t happen though, and Ibaka got moved to the Toronto Raptors after only 56 games.

The front office made another huge mistake in April. After the Magic signed rookie Patricio Garino to a contract, that player’s agent tweeted a picture. The problem is that this photo accidentally revealed Orlando’s offseason priorities on a dry-erase whiteboard in the background. Jon Leuer, Marreese Speights, Kyle Anderson, and Chandler Parsons were all featured on the board, and so it seems like they will target those players this summer.

That list contains a lot of stretch forwards, but here we will focus more on the point guard position. Elfrid Payton has been decent for the Magic so far in his career, but they could use an upgrade. He only played 58 games last season. That was the lowest number during his three years in the NBA, and he only shot 27.4 percent from behind the 3-point line this year. This was a huge decrease from shooting 32.6 percent from downtown the season before.

Here are some players the Magic should pursue this summer.
